چکیده

We present distributed morphogenesis control strategies in a swarm of robots able to autonomously assemble into 3D symbiotic organisms to perform specific tasks. Each robot in such a system can work autonomously, while teams of robots can self-assemble into various morphologies when required. The idea is to combine the advantages of swarm and self-reconfigurable robotic systems in order to investigate and develop novel principles of development and adaptation for “robotic organisms”, from bio-inspired and evolutionary perspectives. Unlike other modular self-reconfigurable robotic systems, individual robots here are independently mobile and can autonomously dock to each other. The goal is that the robots initially form a certain 2D planar structure and, based on their positions in the body plan, the aggregated “organism” should lift itself to form a 3Dconfiguration, thenmove and function as a macroscopic whole. It should also be able to disassemble and reassemble into different morphologies to fulfil certain task requirements.

Autonomous Morphogenesis in Self-assembling Robots Using IR-Based Sensing and Local Communications

This paper presents a simple decentralised morphology control mechanism for a swarm of self-assembling robots. Each robot in the system is fully autonomous and controlled using a behaviour-based approach with only infrared-based local sensing and communications. A graph-based recruitment strategy is proposed to guide the growth of 2D planar organisms, and local communications are used to self-o...

Groß Self - Assembling Robots

We look at robotic systems made of separate discrete components that, by selfassembling, can organize into physical structures of growing size. We review 22 such systems, exhibiting components ranging from passive mechanical parts to mobile robots. We present a taxonomy of the systems, and discuss their design and function. We then focus on a particular system, the swarm-bot. In swarm-bot, the ...

Are Autonomous Mobile Robots Able to Take Over Construction? A Review

Although construction has been known as a highly complex application field for autonomous robotic systems, recent advances in this field offer great hope for using robotic capabilities to develop automated construction. Today, space research agencies seek to build infrastructures without human intervention, and construction companies look to robots with the potential to improve construction qua...

Autonomous Reconfiguration in a Self-assembling Multi-robot System

Self-assembling multi-robot systems can, in theory, overcome the physical limitations of individual robots by connecting to each other to form particular physical structures (morphologies) relevant to specific tasks. Here, we show for the first time how robots in a real-world multi-robot system can autonomously self-assemble into and reconfigure between arbitrary morphologies. We use a distribu...

SWARM-BOT: A Swarm of Autonomous Mobile Robots with Self-Assembling Capabilities

We present a new robotic concept, called SWARM-BOT, based on a swarm of small and simple autonomous mobile robots called S-BOTs. S-BOTs have a particular assembling capability that allows them to connect physically to other S-BOTs and form a bigger robot entity, the SWARM-BOT. A SWARM-BOT is typically composed by 10 to 30 S-BOTs physically interconnected. S-BOTs can autonomously assemble into a...
